 Climate and War

“According to the UN, the richer nations would have to cut their carbon footprint by 97% to stave off the devastating climate change experts project by the end of the decade.”

Phil Butler in New Eastern Outlook notes “It’s no mystery why the United States and allies are hell bent on tromping down Iran, Venezuela, Iraq, and even Russia. These are the only places with substantial fossil fuel energy reserves remaining…Russia, Iran, and to a lesser extent Venezuela have the gas. Europe and North America do not. At least not where inexpensive recovery and refining are concerned. This is why Washington, London, and Brussels need NATO in Ukraine. This is why there are troop build ups on Russia’s frontiers. This is why Vladimir Putin is phoning the White House, calling for sanity.”

Strategic Mistake

“To use the Ukraine to gaud Russia into some aggression to then apply sanctions was likewise a rather lunatic attempt. There is nothing in the Ukraine that would tempt Russia to invade…

Instead of splitting Russia from China the U.S. has unintentionally done its best to push them into a deeper alliance. It was the most severe strategic error the U.S. could make. “

This is how Bernhard of the indispensable Moon of Alabama blog describes the US policy toward Russia.  I agree with his conclusion:  “The narrow-minded bigotry of U.S. decision makers, fed by believe in U.S. exceptionalism while lacking any conception of real power, has led to this defeat.”

Opportunity from Error

As Bernhard notes, the sorry excuse for diplomacy in the US has pushed Russia and China together.  But they will not be standing alone.  Iran, which is now a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, is now in talks with Russia as well.  The Iranian President met with Putin on January 20, and as Yeghia Tashjian reports for The Cradle, “…two recent events involving Russia and Iran had significant resonance: the joint naval exercises between Russia, China, and Iran in the Indian Ocean, and Iran’s relations with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) alongside the materialization of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).”

Coupled with the recent defeat of the US/UK regime change operation in Kazakhstan, it appears that control of Eurasia is slipping from America’s grasp.
